Who are we? Humans can experience inner multiples: personality, emotions, and states of mind, in relation to who we are; who we think we are and why we do the things we do. I am most interested in how we become who we are, where nature and nurture end and where we begin to make conscious decisions as to who we are. These different realities or states of being do not always display themselves externally but can present internally in the form of our subconscious, daydreams, or inner, self-communication. I am interested in personality, self, identity and how they are consciously shaped by our choices. Our actions and the choices we make are the ways in which we steer our destiny. I believe powerfully in the potential people have for choosing happiness and creating lives they wish to live for themselves beyond what they have already been given. However, I also understand that these paths can create difficult choices and demanding questions. With these questions arise our inner multiples which can guide us in the more positive direction of our choosing or, if we are too careless, in a direction of self-destruction. In my painting and video work, I am addressing this idea of multiples, the conflicting duality of our feelings, experiences and choices, by composing a series of Sister Paintings and a Sister Film. This inner communication is represented in these paired pieces through the dialogue with each other, their general similarities in composition and their distinct differences. Each Sister pair communicates with each other and represents the different layers and thoughts of one person. They are just two sides to a multi-faceted being. Separate, they are only one piece of a greater dialogue. The abstract, overlapping line drawings, the ornate patterns in the figurative pair and the word bubbles in the purely abstract pair all represent thoughts and ideas that dwell within me. My inner communication will be different from everyone else, however I hope that through these general symbols there can be the beginnings of a relationship and an exchange of ideas between your multiples and mine.
