I Stand United with Nasty Women Everywhere

Unless you've been living under a rock lately you've probably noticed that we recently got a new president in the White House. It was a pretty historical moment followed by an even bigger historical protest. Millions of people, united in solidarity, marched together to let the world know that Donald Trump isn't their idea of the American dream or even what America needs right now. And I would say I have to agree. Donald Trump is not what American needs, ever. He's a bad business man, has no political experience and is an all around disgusting human being.

There are many deplorable things Donald Trump has done already, and I am sure many more he will do. I won't go into it, you can just google it for yourself. But if you believe everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, that global warming is not a joke and ESPECIALLY if you think a woman's body is her own damn business, I invite you to join me and stand united with all nasty women.

Ladies and gentlemen, we've got work to do, the fight has just started. Please feel free to download this poster and to also visit my good friends site, J20, for some more awesome posters and upcoming events in Honolulu.

Say it loud say it proud friend. I stand united with all Nasty Women.

"Art at Large" Mural at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

For a limited time (all of 2017) between the Law Library and the Music Dept at UH Manoa you'll find a wonderfully colorful collection of impromptu murals by current art students and alumni. I am very excited to be one of the invited alumna! About 13 student artists are participating, and the work will be featured on the plywood barricades surrounding the construction site at the corner of Dole Street and Lower Campus Road.

Here is what the original plywood barricade looked like. It's going to be so much better with art on it! Please also visit: www.hawaii.edu/art/art-at-large/ to see more images and read the various artists' statements about their individual pieces.

ART AT LARGE is a mural project administered the UHM Department of Art + Art History. It aims to take artwork out of the studio and galleries into public space, and to provide UHM students and alums the opportunity to continue their individual artistic explorations in a larger scale than that can accommodated in the department studios.
— Gaye Chan (UH Manoa Art Dept Chair)

My final piece is actually a fun representation on color theory! Specifically Isaac Newton's theory of light and refraction. The icebergs represent the prism that the sun shines through to create the ROYGBIV rainbow. And although Newton choose to represent the color spectrum n his writing seven separate colors (even though I would argue that the spectrum is really only one subtly shifting band of light) I choose to paint six octopuses, one to represent each color on the classic color wheel used by painters still.

Please feel free to scroll through my pictures to see a little bit of my process. I try to paint very quickly so this only took me about a day and a half. The final dimensions are 8" tall x 16" long.

Mural for Island Distillers

With everything going on right now I almost forgot to write about my big BIG mural in Hawaii Kai! A few months ago I was approached to do this large mural on a new distillery/tasting room for Island Distillers which opens late summer 2016. Little did I know what I was getting myself into!

Check out my slideshow with some in-progress shots as well as a view of the final piece.

Over 100 feet long and 16 feet tall I can safely say this is the biggest painting I've ever done. Since I'm teaching full time this project had to be completed on the weekends in the early morning to outpace the sun. This means driving from Ewa to Hawaii Kai at 4am! Whew! (for those that don't know, this means driving across Oahu every weekend for two months!)

I am pretty proud of this big mural. Beside a few days where someone had to hold the ladder (to make sure I don't get blown off by the wind eek!) I did this mural entirely solo. I've learned a lot from this experience but I think I can safety say now I am an experienced mural painter. Mahalo for looking and I'll be sure to send an invitation to the big opening soon.
